how to create a capsule wardrobe

I’ve been living off a capsule wardrobe now for a few months and I absolutely love it! It has completely simplified my life and gotten rid of a lot of clutter. Today I’m sharing with you a step by step guide on how to create a capsule wardrobe.

1. Think about your needs

Depending on how you spend your days, you may need certain types of clothes. It’s also important to take into consideration how often you do laundry and how many pieces you need to get you from one load to the next.

2. Find your personal style

Notice the types of clothes you gravitate towards and create your personal uniform. Think of this as your go-to formula for picking out an outfit. Most capsule wardrobes are full of neutral tones, but it’s OK to add in color if that’s your thing.

3. Decide if you need seasonal capsules

Start with a core capsule and then separate out your seasonal items. Your core capsule should consist of items like your favorite blue jeans that can be worn year round. Keep your core capsule in your closet all year long, and store your seasonal items in a bin.

4. Get rid of extras

Keep only the items in your closet that fit your personal style. No matter how much you love it, you won’t wear it if it isn’t your style. This goes for items that aren’t flattering your figure as well. Quit hanging on to that pair of jeans you hope to fit into one day. The best form of self-love is dressing for the body you have.

5. Be intentional with future purchases

Over time, you may want to add in a few new items. Be intentional and only buy what you truly love. Don’t get caught up in a good deal unless its an item you’ve wanted for a while. Extra credit if you choose to go thrift shopping or choose local sustainable brands.

6. Refine your wardrobe

Go through your closet a few times a year and whittle away any items you no longer love or use. It may take a few tries to get the perfect combination of items for your capsule, but don’t give up! You may find you can live with even less than you thought.

All in all, your capsule wardrobe should be full of clothes that you are excited to wear. Remember that your capsule needs to fit you and your unique needs. It’s meant to make your life simpler, so have fun with it!
